Recap of the First NYC Social TV Meetup

Socialbomb recently played host to the first ever meetup focused on Social TV in New York City. We had a good turnout for our first meetup, with about 25 people coming by to talk about the intersection of video content, social media, and mobile computing.
As people arrived, it became clear that we had a good balance of people working on social TV applications, people from the network and content creation side, as well as artists and technologists who had heard about social TV and wanted to know more. I did a quick talk to set a level playing field in terms of terminology and recent developments in the space, which I later wrote up as a blog post for Talk NYC.
From there, the conversation quickly took off, and spanned a wide range of topics. Most of us were interested in talking about what the user experience should ultimately be. Then there was a spirited debate about the value of check-in services. Get Glue had representatives present at the meetup, ready to expand on what happens with their users after they check-in. And discussion at one point veered towards business and distribution models, and whether they were holding back innovation, or if we should be focused on working within the current models. With sharply held opinions on each side, we ended the evening with a conversation about designing for partnerships with the content providers versus designing tools for users to engage with independently. It was a great evening, with lots of interesting points raised throughout.
And now, we’re announcing our next Social TV Meetup for Thursday, April 28th. If you’re in New York City, come by and talk TV with us!
